Alien: Romulus – the ending could have been very different (and closer to the first films)

-

One of the artists who worked on Alien : Romulus Fede Alvarez revealed that the ending of the film could have been something completely different. Spoiler alert!

Widely acclaimed by the public and critics, Alien : Romulus has succeeded in bringing the xenomorph back to the cinema in the best of its form. And if Fede Alvarez’s film is not without its flaws, between this strange ending of Romulus who wants to make the connection with Prometheusand its easter eggs in abundance, including the well-hidden presence of this cult character from the saga Alienthe return of Scott’s creature is still peppered with a few moments of glory, including a very edgy finale.

During the final stretch ofAlien : RomulusKay’s character, pregnant up to her neck, gives birth to a hybrid creature, named The Offspring (the offspring). A half-human, half-xenomorph alien, with white skin and a face too human not to feel a deep unease, whose appearance is the climax of the film, and an obvious homage to the New Born d’Alien : Resurrection. However, one of the artists who worked on Alien Romulus revealed that this final phase could have been very different.

Alien Romulus and his hybrids

The concept artist Col Price (having worked on Dune 2 et The Matrix 4), known on social networks and in the world of the 7th Art under the name of studio Coldesignrevealed on X/Twitter that director Fede Alvarez had encouraged his flock to make design proposals for the Offspring which appears in the final sequence ofAlien : Romulus. Putting his words into action, Col Price has released some images of his preliminary work for the hybrid Romulus.

“During Alien: Romulus, Fede Alvarez encouraged us all to come up with suggestions for the hybrid. I don’t really do creatures, but I tried on Nomad Sculpt. I know Fede really liked them. They’re a lot of fun to do.”

The Secret of the Fresh Alien

After posting these first images online on September 3, 2024, Col Price returned to the charge the next day, with a new salvo of proposals for the Hybrid ofAlien RomulusThese are also rejected proposals, but they allow us to see the evolution of the design of the final Hybrid.

This proposal comes a little closer to the original xenomorph design.with an elongated occipital helmet, which immediately recalls the characteristic shape of the alien phallic skull. Common to the various proposals of Col Price, the gaunt jaw seems to be an echo of the design of Chatterer, the cenobite with bloody teeth and gums of the Hellraiser by Clive Barker. We can also see a connection with the NeoMorph d’Alien Covenantbetween his pale complexion and the sort of shark fin screwed to the back of his skull.

These design proposals remain closer to the classic looks of the xenomorphs from the early days of the saga. The creatures would have kept an appearance closer to the alien, and less human. Alien Romulus has chosen to abandon these designs in favor of a Offspring much more humanoid, with this face on the borders of theuncanny valley. A disturbing strangeness caused by this human face grafted onto an emaciated xenomorph body, which seems to create a link between alien, engineer and human being.

Alien : Romulus has been in French cinemas since August 14, 2024.
