After an intense MotoGP season which had a rather bad start for Honda and its riders, the 2024 campaign ended on a very encouraging note, with numerous points and several passages in Q2. Thanks to Johann Zarco, mainly. Performances which did not go unnoticed, as confirmed by the main person concerned.
MotoGP: Yes, Zarco impressed us
Johann Zarco is having his worst season in MotoGP since his debut in the premier category. And yet, rarely have the Frenchman's performances been highlighted to this extent. Because, when you're driving the slowest machine on the board, every performance feels like a victory. So, for the LCR rider, his exploits this year have put him more in the spotlight than his 2023 season with Ducati and Pramac.
« I saw in the French media, but also on social networks, that people are impressed by the way I did the season. That was my approach, because I couldn't let it drive me crazy“, declares Johann Zarco. “ It was also a personal challenge for me. When you are with Ducati it is also difficult because all the bikes are fast. The assessment is therefore different. I took on a new challenge that was positive this year.”
« I tried to enjoy every moment of the season. Although it was sometimes difficult when we couldn't keep up with the other runners. But in the last six races I was able to follow them and fight with them. I was back in the business and it was a good feeling. Maybe it took longer than expected, but better late than never. It was a great motivation for Honda, for Lucio, for the team and for me at the right time.”
[…]« This is why you have to analyze everything carefully. It was difficult, but I knew I wouldn't be in the same position as last year. It allowed me to accept that. That’s why I wanted to find joy all season long. I hope that this year's work can be a step forward for the next two years. Motivation is high. I hope this step back will help me move forward in the future. That would be ideal“, he concludes.
Clearly, Johann took on a new dimension this year, his work of analysis and understanding of his bike having been more visible than when he was riding a Ducati. However, with the Italian manufacturer, the Frenchman had already contributed a lot on this point. Clearly, JZ5 is undoubtedly belatedly obtaining the recognition that it has lacked in recent seasons. Now it remains to be reaped, in terms of results, with new podiums and victories. Which would only be a fair return of things…
