MotoGP Barcelona J2, Luca Marini (Honda Q16/S15): “I expected more”

It wasn't the result we hoped for, but it's still a catch. Once again, Luca Marini is in position to take points on Sunday in Barcelona, but this time he wasn't so happy with his Saturday. Behind Joan Mir in qualifying (which is becoming rare), he did not gain a single place during the Sprint, the difference between his starting and finishing position being explained by the abandonment of Pedro Acosta. The Italian feels the wind of renewal at Honda, and does not want to let more opportunities pass him by.

Luca Marini, always calm and ambitious, would like to do even better tomorrow. « I expected a little more from today's race, especially at the start : I wasn't able to take advantage of the tire's extra grip to attack at the start. After the first two laps my pace was good, we need to find more rear traction to turn more » he asserted. This traction problem is well known within the team.

However, like Zarco, it is clear that Honda is making progress, at least in the 2023 season. « There is work to be done, but we see that there is room to do it and we will keep trying until the last race tomorrow. » Whatever anyone says, Luca Marini's behavior and approach this season has been nothing short of exemplary.

Doing a second round on a circuit – which has happened twice this season already – allows a direct comparison, and offers, in the case of Honda, an additional opportunity to understand progress. « Coming back to Barcelona allows us to check the difference we have made during the year, which is very positive »
he concluded.
