Spaniard Marc Marquez won the Australian Grand Prix ahead of his compatriot Jorge Martin, who regained a slight lead in the MotoGP world championship over Italian Francesco Bagnaia, third on Sunday.

A comeback after a bad start

Marquez (Ducati-Gresini) and Martin (Ducati-Pramac) engaged in an intense battle throughout the race. This ultimately worked to the advantage of the six-time world champion who won his third Grand Prix of the year, proving his return to the top even if he no longer has any chance of winning the championship.

Marquez, however, got off to a very bad start with a spectacular skid of his rear wheel and found himself seventh while Jorge Martin got off to a perfect start, followed by Marco Bezzecchi (Ducati VR46) and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati).

The world championship leader quickly widened the gap while, behind him, Bezzecchi fell. But like the day before during the sprint race, Marquez began a relentless comeback, appearing in third place after seven laps behind Bagnaia who he quickly attacked, the two drivers closing in on Martin.

A final battle dispatched

The three drivers then launched into a fierce fight, their pursuers quickly being relegated to almost four seconds. Bagnaia, however, was quickly let down by the two Spaniards who were battling it out in the lead.

If Martin managed to resist Marquez’s pressure until four laps from the checkered flag, the six-time world champion overtook him without a shot, the Ducati-Pramac rider vainly trying to resist but having to let Marquez slip away as he crossed the line finishing almost a second ahead.

Note that the young Spanish prodigy Pedro Acosta (GasGas-Tech3) had to withdraw from the race after injuring his shoulder the day before when he fell during the sprint race, won by Jorge Martin.
