The Coimbra Local Health Unit (ULS) announced this Thursday that 47 specialist doctors have been hired for hospital care, to ensure the response capacity and quality of health services to the population.
The most strengthened specialties were internal medicine (5), anesthesiology (4) and pediatrics (4), followed by general surgery (3) and psychiatry (3).
In a statement, that structure also revealed that on Friday, employment contracts will be signed with new doctors specializing in General and Family Medicine, which will allow assigning a family doctor to more than 20 thousand users in the various municipalities covered.
The ULS of Coimbra has 2,183 doctors on its staff, of which 837 are interns, making it the “largest training entity in the country”.
“Although, globally, we are the national entity with the largest and most comprehensive offer of health care (more than 10,000 medical consultations and surgeries per working day), the continuous increase in demand requires an increase in the assistance response of this health unit”, says the statement.
The ULS of Coimbra guarantees a radius of action in 21 municipalities and approximately 415 thousand users, of which around half are elderly and the population density is lower.
The Coimbra University Hospital Centre (CHUC) includes the Coimbra University Hospitals, the General Hospital (commonly known as the Covões Hospital), the Paediatric Hospital and the Bissaya Barreto and Daniel de Matos maternity hospitals and the Sobral Cid Hospital, in Coimbra, as well as the Arcebispo João Crisóstomo Hospital, in Cantanhede, and the Rovisco Pais Centre for Rehabilitation Medicine of the Central Region, in Tocha (municipality of Cantanhede).
The CHUC also includes 26 health centers in 21 municipalities in the Baixo Mondego and Pinhal Interior Norte groups.
