The recent increase, the institute said, may underscore the trend of consumers opting for less expensive products and cutting back on spending as inflation erodes their purchasing power. “This category tends to grow when the economy weakens,” the study notes. “Sausage is a good substitute for more expensive proteins, stretching consumers’ food budgets.”

A sign of recession?

While US inflation has stabilized at “acceptable” levels, according to economic officials, around 3% (2.2% for food products), the year 2022, when inflation reached 8% over the year, has worried the public, who continue to change their consumption patterns. The consumer price index, another important indicator of inflation, has been rising steadily for a year across the Atlantic.
