Court documents reveal staggering Manchester City contract details of former defender Benjamin Mendy

Contractual terms included in the contract of former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy have been detailed in court documents, it has been revealed.

Benjamin Mendy first joined City from AS Monaco in a £52 million deal back in 2017, going on to win Premier League titles in all of 2018, 2019 and 2021, before ultimately making his final appearance for the club on 15 August 2021.

Mendy did not bring an end to his City career until his contract expiry date in June 2023, and now currently plays for French side , having been remanded in custody for five months before he was released on bail in January 2022.

The case went to trial for the first time in August 2022, and in January 2023 he was cleared of six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, before being further cleared of raping a woman and attempting to rape another in July 2023 at a retrial.

Now, at an employment tribunal in which Benjamin Mendy is claiming over £11 million in unpaid wages by the reigning Premier League champions following the date of his first charge in 2021, his contractual details at the Etihad Stadium have also surfaced.

As relayed by the Evening Standard, Benjamin Mendy’s Manchester City contract had been worth an eye-watering £500,000 per month, which was withheld by the club after he was first charged in 2021, an employment tribunal has heard.

The defender’s Etihad Stadium contract also showed he would receive a £900,000 bonus for appearing in 60 per cent of matches, a £1 million bonus if Manchester City qualified for the UEFA Champions League, and an annual £1.2 million payment to his image rights company.

As part of the hearing, Mendy is understood to have sent a Whatsapp message to Manchester City’s former Chief Football Operations’ Officer, Omar Berrada in November 2022 to ask when he would receive his outstanding salaries but received no reply.

Mendy’s agent Meissa N’Diaye claims that on 20 September 2021 he spoke to Omar Berrada and was told “once the trial was over Benjamin would be paid back all the salary that had been suspended”.

Berrada, who is now Manchester United’s chief executive having left Manchester City prior to the most recent summer transfer window, has denied giving assurances when asked about this at the hearing.

The tribunal hearing is expected to last two days.
