According to the United Nations (UN), global food systems, that is to say agricultural production, as well as the packaging and distribution of foodstuffs, are responsible for more than a third of greenhouse gas emissions. greenhouse in the world.

In order to limit the impact of our diet on the environment, the UN recommends consuming more foods of plant origin, less resource-intensive than those of animal origin, and produced locally, to restrict emissions linked to transportation.

As revealed by a survey carried out between July 2023 and June 2024 as part of Consumer Insights, on average, in the 21 countries covered by the study, around one in four consumers surveyed cited the regionality of products among the important criteria in the choice of diet (several possible answers among 16 criteria). In detail, the Swiss and Austrians are the most inclined to turn to local products (45% cited this aspect as important), followed by the Germans (38%), the French (34%) and the Italians ( 32%).

Conversely, the regionality of food products seems to be of much less importance for American and Chinese consumers: only 10% of them cited this criterion as coming into play in their consumption choices.
