The world is moving fast. A technology that is revolutionary one day can quickly become obsolete. While we are at 5G, let us remember the implementation, in the 1980s, of 2G. At the time, this device was a major advance in the field of telecommunications.
It is thanks to 2G that mobile phones were able to see the light of day. It is not a question of calling into question the impact, in its time, of this system. On the other hand, we must face reality. After more than four decades of service, this iconic network is on the verge of disappearing. Its replacement, 3G, will in turn die out by 2028.
The end of a once revolutionary device
The end of 2G, then 3G, is not really surprising. Some of our readers, no doubt, didn't know they still existed. It must be said that they are now obsolete. Worse, they unnecessarily occupy valuable frequencies in a technological environment where 4G and 5G dominate.
But this transition to a world without 2G and 3G will not be without consequences. An element of our daily life, in particular, is still linked to this system. These are elevators.

From 2025, the main French operators (Orange, SFR and Bouygues) will stop operating the 2G network. This change poses a major problem for the alarm and communication systems of many elevators. In fact, there are 630,000 of them still operating via this network (according to Presse-Citron).
A device that does not disappear without cost
This situation involves considerable costs for the co-owners. Indeed, they will have to adapt the devices of their buildings. Modernizing these systems will require expensive work. Estimates project expenditures ranging from 800 and 1,500 euros by elevator.
Added to this will be an increase in subscription fees for this equipment, which should double. Subscriptions would in fact increase from 400 euros to 800 euros per year.
Furthermore, the disappearance of this device is not limited to elevators. Many devices still in use (old cell phones) will become unusable. This forced obsolescence will lead to additional expenses for individualswho will have to replace this equipment.
A necessary development, but which comes at a cost
The end of this system has a double financial consequence. Indeed, not only the co-owners will have to modernize their elevatorsbut users of phones and other connected devices will also need to invest in solutions compatible with today's networks.

Despite everything, it is an inevitable transition to free up frequencies and promote the expansion of more advanced technologies. But just because a transition is logical doesn't mean it doesn't have its share of challenges. For professionals and individuals alike, the end of 2G means increased costs.
But it is essential to live with the times and not always look back. The 2G device was revolutionary, it is no longer so today. 3G will follow in its footsteps. And, one day, 4G and 5G too. Because the world continues to turn and evolve to modernize.
