The latest Android Auto update, version 13.4, introduces customization elements inspired by Material You, Google’s design language.
With Android Auto 13.4, Google begins to integrate colorful accents from its design Material You. This functionality, which brings an aesthetic touch to the application interface, still requires some finishing touches from Google.

Android Auto takes on the Material You design colors
The update Android Auto 13.4 deployed by Google offers a visible novelty: the addition of colored accents to its user interface. Inspired by Material You, this development uses the colors chosen on your phone directly on the screen of your vehicle. The changes are noticeable in elements such as buttons, map backgrounds and even menus.
However, this customization is not completely new. Some music apps on Android Auto already adjusted their interface based on album art. The update now extends this logic to the entire system, although the applications themselves are not yet affected.
To activate this feature, you must have configured your phone so that the colors of its interface match your wallpaper. But operation sometimes remains erratic: color changes are not systematically displayed and sometimes require a forced restart of the application.
Other changes to come?
The integration of the Material You interface codes still seems to be under development. User feedback indicates some inconsistency in color behavior. Google has not yet communicated a date for fixes or a finalized version of this feature.
Google continues to evolve Android Auto by testing new features, such as a new way to make calls or the arrival of Waze incident reports. The application remains a safe bet for benefiting from useful driving assistance information, while allowing you to remain as focused as possible on the road.
