Barcelona bans gas heaters from terraces
Once omnipresent on the terraces of Barcelona in winter, gas heaters, veritable CO2 factories, are now bowing out. The city, faithful to its climate commitments, has decided to replace them with electric heating. The latter, limited to a power of 150 W/m², can only be used between November 1 and April 30.
Since 2018, Barcelona City Hall has worked in collaboration with restaurateurs to ensure a gradual transition towards more environmentally friendly heating solutions. Gas heaters have been replaced by greener electric devices, combining comfort and sustainability. This approach has prepared professionals for the 2025 deadline, while raising users’ awareness of ecological issues.
Non-compliant terraces in 2025? Beware of sanctions
As soon as the new regulations come into force, the installation and use of gas heaters on terraces will be strictly prohibited in Barcelona. Authorizations previously granted to this type of equipment will be automatically canceled, and offenders will be exposed to sanctions, the terms of which remain to be defined.
This “cold snap” on the terraces is part of an approach by the city, which continues to set an example in terms of ecology. Barcelona hopes to inspire other major European cities to follow in its wake to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
