A synagogue in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, in the west of the island of Montreal, was set on fire overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, causing outrage among the Jewish community which has been the target of numerous hate crimes in the recent months.

Firefighters were called to go to the place of worship located on Westpark Street, near Roger-Pilon Street, around 3 a.m. The synagogue as well as a community building of the Beth-Tikvah congregation were affected. A projectile impact was visible in a window of the building, TVA Nouvelles noted. Other damage, such as broken doors, was also observed.

Fortunately, no one was inside at the time of the tragedy.
“This is the second time that this synagogue has been hit, and the Community Federation building is the first time,” reported Julien Corona, spokesperson for the Advisory Center for Jewish and Israeli Relations. .
“This is the seventh attack in less than 14 months. After a while, enough is enough. We are outraged,” he proclaimed.
“Unacceptable”
Public Security Minister François Bonnardel declared on the social network He assured that “the SPVM will increase its visibility in the neighborhood to reassure the population.”
“We will let the police carry out the investigation. I repeat, these gestures have no place in Quebec,” he stressed.
Prime Minister François Legault supported his minister’s exit, saying that “this is not the Quebec we want.”
The mayor of Montreal, Valérie Plante, stressed that “the SPVM is investigating and will find the culprits.”
“It is intolerable that Montreal citizens live in insecurity because of their religion,” she lamented.
