Firefighters intervened Tuesday morning when a fire started with smoke and flames at the chimney of a bread oven at the St-Méthode Bakery in Adstock.
The call was received around 4:45 a.m. “When we arrived, there was indeed a confirmed fire in one of the chimneys. After checking, we noticed a propagation at the level of the chimney box which is located on the roof. The firefighters had to dismantle the chimney and the box to ensure that there was no risk of spreading to the roof of the factory. The fire was controlled this way,” explained the director of the Adstock Fire Safety Department, Jean Gagnon.
An accumulation of natural gas at the chimney would have created an explosion and caused the start of a fire. A maintenance worker reportedly inhaled smoke and was not feeling well. He was transported to the hospital as a preventive measure.
The intervention ended around 7 a.m. East Broughton firefighters assisted their Adstock colleagues with the tanker and lifting vehicle. Around fifteen firefighters were mobilized.
According to Rémi L’Écuyer, marketing director of the company, the incident will force the bakery to temporarily stop the production of certain breads. He said the team was working hard to quickly resume normal operations, but it was not possible to confirm a date.
