To mark its 50th anniversary, the Association genevoise du musée des tramways (AGMT) presents to the public a goods wagon recreated in the image of those which traveled the local tram lines at the beginning of the 20th century. This car is added to the collection of old motor cars and trailers of the AGMT.
At the start of the 20th century, the Geneva Electric Tramway Company (CGTE) owned around fifty freight cars. Circulating mainly on the countryside lines of the Geneva conurbation, they were used for the transport of salt, luggage, parcels, industrial ice or gravel.
The wagon recreated by the AGMT resembles those which had been built by the former Swiss Tramways (TS) or La Voie Etroite (VE) companies between 1891 and 1896. The CGTE had 9 similar wagons. They were mainly used to collect milk from producers and then deliver it to Laiteries Réunies.
The covered wagon presented on the occasion of the AGMT jubilee was rebuilt on the basis of a model from the Bex-Villars-Bretaye (BVB) line, the association said in a press release published on Sunday.
The AGMT is an association which now has 350 members, passionate about historic tramways. Thirty volunteers are active in the maintenance and restoration of vehicles. They also participate in the operation of old trams and run them every first Sunday of the month.
By 1924, Geneva had developed the largest tram network in Switzerland. In addition to the preservation of old vehicles, the AGTM also aims, in the long term, “to be able to bring together and present all of its rich collection in a museum”.
