Due to the risk of violent storms on Thursday, the Canton of Vaud has decided to cancel all school activities taking place outside from 11:00 a.m. This policy of “zero risk” therefore concerns school races, various outings, sports games or even the swimming pool.
The 93 schools in the canton are targeted, spokesman for the Department of Education and Vocational Training (DEF), Julien Schekter, told Keystone-ATS, confirming information from 24 hours. They were warned last night, he says.
“The zero risk policy was applied, we remember the storms of July 2021 when several Vaud students were injured and shocked in Bulle by the violence of the storm and hail. The parents were informed as far as possible and via the usual channels between yesterday evening and this morning, ”explains the spokesperson.
Measures have also been taken with school transport in certain establishments to secure their exit from school or if the journey to get to the school transport stop or the moment when this movement takes place presents a danger, according to him.
Everybody is concerned
Meteo Switzerland is expecting severe thunderstorms in Switzerland on Thursday with gusts of more than 100 km/h, hail and lightning strikes. This weather pre-alert is valid from noon.
The Vaud police relayed this warning on social networks on Wednesday, which concerns the entire canton of Vaud, and beyond. It recommends that the population limit their movements during the afternoon and evening, and to give up walks in the mountains, in the forest and along the rivers.
It is also advisable to avoid any activity on bodies of water as well as to take cover under trees in the event of lightning. Before leaving their homes, the police ask everyone to ensure that they close windows, doors and skylights, roll up the blinds, roll up the swimming pool covers and bring in the garden furniture.
