The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) has just published the figures for the so-called “reference” population for the year 2022. A demographic photography which highlights contrasting social trends within Hauts-de -France.
182,854 inhabitants in Amiens in 2022
As of January 1, 2022, Amiens Métropole counted 182 854 habitantswith an average annual increase of 0.3 % since 2016. This increase represents almost 2,000 additional inhabitants for the agglomeration in six years. The city of Amiens, with its 134,780 inhabitants, is experiencing a more moderate increase of 0.1 % per year over the same period.
This local dynamic contrasts with the demographic decline recorded across the Hauts-de-France region (-1,330 inhabitants per year on average) and the Somme department (-1,200 inhabitants per year since 2016). The region had nearly six million inhabitants in 2022, while the sum listed 565,540.
Birth growth
If Amiens Métropole displays a slight growth, it is mainly thanks to a positive natural balance: each year, births surpass deaths, with an average increase of +0.4 %. This compensates for a migratory deficit of -0.3 %, reflecting more departures than arrivals on the territory.
-A permanent social census
These figures, published in January 2025, are the result of a continuous and precise census. INSEE recalls that the “reference population” is based on a rigorous methodology aimed at guaranteeing equal treatment between the municipalities. In parallel, the enumerators carry out detailed investigations, relating in particular to travel and housing, in order to better understand the local dynamics.
This year, eleven municipalities in the Amiens agglomeration are affected by the census: Amiens (for a game), Bovelles, Clairy-Saulchoix, Creuse, Longueau, Pissy, Poulainville, Sains-en-Aménois, Saint-Fuscien, Saleux, and Glisy. Since 2015, residents can respond online thanks to personalized access codes. Two agents are mobilized in Glisy to ensure that surveys are carried out and to support citizens, especially those without internet or reluctant to this type of approach.
