Emmanuel Macron, the president who digs … but not oil

Emmanuel Macron won a record … but certainly not the one he hoped for: that of unpopularity. In the latest IFOP wave for the JDD – the oldest barometer and, let's be frank, the most reliable – only 21 % of French people say they are satisfied with its action. In other words, 79 % dissatisfied. A monumental slap, a scathing reverse, a real camouflet.

To find worse, you have to go back to François Hollande, in autumn 2014: 13 % satisfied. Emmanuel Macron gets closer dangerously, and it's not exactly the kind of record that makes you want. With the exception of François Hollande, no president of the Fifth Republic had never dropped so low. The slope is steep, and the fall, dizzying.

Even General de Gaulle, in his darkest hours, fell only 42 %, double. François Mitterrand, at the twilight of his reign, was flirting with 22 %. But Emmanuel Macron? He is in free fall in mid-term. And the worst? He loses where it hurts: with his faithful. The retirees, his famous “electoral magot”, abandon him en masse. Minus 10 points in a few months.

“He walks abroad and is no longer interested in us”

But there is another precious element in this barometer: the comments of the French themselves. Grute comments, filter without. And there, surprise: fewer insults, fewer outbursts than in recent months. But don't get me wrong, it's not a renewed affection … It is indifference. For many, Emmanuel Macron, it's already over. “He walks abroad and is no longer interested in us”let go of a French. “He made his circus in , now he walks from country to country”quips another. It hurts.

Where a François Mitterrand or a Jacques Chirac, in times of cohabitation, managed to get out of the game by playing the wise above the fray, Emmanuel Macron is accused … of hiding behind his Prime Minister. And this choice to move away from orders, hoping to restore its image, did not have the expected effect. Do you know the adage “far from the eyes, near the heart”? Well, with Macron, it's rather “far from the eyes … far from the heart”.

End of reign atmosphere

And then there is dissolution, this famous poker stroke which is more and more like a Russian roulette. Perhaps the most misunderstood decision of the whole Fifth Republic. The French have still not digested it. Worse: they have the impression that their president has become like them, a powerless spectator in front of the ambient political chaos. Result ? Many are already ready to turn the page, with a clear title in mind: “End of reign!” »»

So, can we expect changes by 2027, or will Emmanuel Macron be content to undergo the end of his five-year term? Difficult to know. But for the moment, he rowed. His last outing where he advertised an Islamist and mythomaniac influencer was a total fiasco. So what's left? Two strings to his bow, and no more.

Emmanuel Macron wants to go back to the basics of the Fifth Republic

First, the international. With the return of Donald Trump to the White House, Emmanuel Macron wants to land as a Savior of Europe. His message: without a minimum of independence, Europe will be sandwiched between the world giants. And even weakened, the head of state can still play the dean card of European leaders.

Then the direct link with the French. Emmanuel Macron wants to go back to the fundamentals of the Fifth Republic, Gaullian version: on the one hand, the Prime Minister-Parliament couple, and on the other, the duo president. And to recreate this direct link? The fatal weapon: the referendum. But there, beware: you have to ask a courageous question, because asking a question to the French in a context of record unpopularity is to play with fire. How to prevent this referendum from turning to the sanction against him? Difficult to escape the plebiscian logic.

What if the ballot boxes say “no”? It would be a bomb. A political deflagration. The calls for his resignation would fuse, and some would still claim an early presidential election. Emmanuel Macron, already on the ground in the polls, could dig even … and always lower. It must be said that in politics, there is a well -known adage: “By dint of digging, we end up finding oil. »»
