Rumors about the Prime Minister’s participation had sparked controversy.

He will not attend the ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. Despite rumors, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not travel to Poland this Monday. This was confirmed on Europe 1 by Joshua Zarka, Israeli ambassador to France. “The Israeli Prime Minister is taking care of the release of our hostages, the war and ensuring that things start to return to some normality in Israel. Unfortunately, he would not have been able to participate.” Israel will therefore be represented by its Minister of Education, Yoav Kisch.

54 international delegations, around fifty survivors

Rumors about Benjamin Netanyahu’s possible participation have sparked controversy. Last year, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for the prime minister on suspicion of crimes against humanity and war crimes. But at the request of Polish President Andrzej Duda, the Polish government confirmed last month that it would not arrest him over a visit to Auschwitz.

In addition to several heads of state including Emmanuel Macron, Justin Trudeau, Olaf Scholz and Charles III, the ceremony which will begin Monday at 3 p.m. GMT will bring together 54 international delegations. Around fifty survivors will also be present.
