With its large feather dusters and its cutting stems, theherbe of the pampas is a plant that is certainly aesthetic but harmful to biodiversity.
They can be found along many roads, in parks and many gardens. Used as an ornamental plant and prized for its bohemian side, pampas grass is considered an invasive species.
Banned in France since a ministerial decree
It has been banned in France since a ministerial decree updated several times.
In several regions such as Brittany, eradication campaigns have been launched to eliminate this plant from roadsides, public spaces and sensitive areas.
This plant is capable of producing up to 1 million seeds, which when swept by the wind can give rise to new plants. Reproduction is therefore rapid and invasive.
Classified as an invasive species
In addition, pampas is a grass with a high allergenic potential with pollen that can cause severe irritation.
-Classified among the invasive plant species, pampas grass is therefore prohibited in metropolitan France.
It is therefore strictly prohibited to introduce it into France, hold it, use it, exchange it, transport it alive or market it.
It is also strictly forbidden to plant new plants. If you already have a foot of pampas grass in your garden, it is strongly recommended to cut it as much as possible or even pull it out if possible.
Difficult to remove a foot
This plant having imposing roots firmly anchored in the ground, its uprooting is often a feat. Most of the time, you have to use construction equipment to get rid of a foot.
Concerning feather dusters, it is advisable to cut them taking care not to spread sheaves in nature. It is recommended to cut them at the beginning of summer.
