Two mailbox looters, aged 39 and 42, were sentenced to 6 months in prison on Wednesday January 22, 2025 at the Versailles court. They had made Yvelines their hunting ground to steal a maximum number of packages.
In September 2024, the Plaisir police station received numerous complaints following the theft of packages directly from the lobby of buildings, mainly in Saint-Cyr-l'Ecole. Investigators go to the scene. Some entrances are equipped with video surveillance.
The footage shows two men facing the mailbox wall. With a keythey open the entire facade. And they ship all the packages present.
During the investigations, a resident of Villepreux warned the police of similar events. The two thugs fled by car. This same vehicle was spotted in Saint-Cyr-l'Ecole but also in Clayes-sous-Bois, Plaisir and Bois-d'Arcy. In total, 17 facts are compiled in the procedure.
-To resell, give away or throw away
On January 21, the police went to the suspects' homes, in Lieusaint (Seine-et-Marne – dep 77) and in Guyancourt. They comb the homes and get their hands on several cell phones, the registration document of a vehicle reported stolen during a home-jacking in Plaisir on November 13, 2024. And above all, they get their hands on four passes of La Poste allowing the fronts of mailboxes to be opened. The key can be easily purchased on the Internet for around 7 euros.
When questioned, the two men admitted the facts. The first claimed he was reselling the packages by weight without even opening them, in a home in Vitry-sur-Seine (Val-de-Marne – dep. 94). The second assured that he returned, donated or threw away the products that did not suit him. The two explained that they were “only acting like the little ones in the city and most parcel delivery people,” as the police specified in the press release of the case.
For this 6-month sentence, the courts decided to adjust the firm part. The sentencing judge may decide on semi-release, or even house arrest.
