Development of the Bairon site: reshaped to strengthen its attractiveness

The Departmental Council of Ardennes aims to make Lake Bairon a real tourist resort, particularly attractive, thanks to new services and more modern leisure and sports equipment closer to the needs of the public.

Significant work will soon start, at the end of this year 2023, to revitalize the place, considered one of the most beautiful natural sites in the department. The project also takes into account this aspect and plans to preserve the wild and natural identity of Lac de Bairon, dear to tourists and Ardennes users.

Consultation at the heart of the project

The CD08 wanted to place consultation at the heart of its project. Investigations, through workshops and questionnaires, were carried out this summer by CD08 agents, who went to direct contact with users and tourists. The exchanges made it possible to measure the level of satisfaction and above all, the expectations. The association of lake users is also placed at the heart of the approach, which also incorporates phases of observation of behavior on site. Finally, many interviews will take place in the weeks and months which come with all the actors concerned by the work and the evolution of the site.

The priority axes of the project

Pedestrian safety and road traffic along the departmental roads 312 and 212: priority to pedestrians is at the heart of this transformation project, as well as cycle continuity with the South-Ardennes greenway.

The walking path around the lake: the walk stretches on a 5.5 km loop. The maximum coast of 8.5 m (lake level) has been acted with VNF, and exchanges will be engaged to write the conventions relating to the use of the lake tour.

A new treatment plant: the project manager is being recruited in order to initiate its realization in 2024. The municipality of Bairon-et-Ses-Environs deliberately favorably to resume the maintenance and management of the future equipment to its commissioning.

The development of public spaces and the improvement of the equipment and services present: in parking, two parking lots will be set up, one for motorists arriving from Charleville-Mézières / Axis A34-Terron Pages outing, the other for Cars from Sedan. The creation of a motorhome area is also on the program. Regarding the power supply points and the fairground boxes, the extension of the electrical network and the implementation of fairground boxes for itinerant and dealerships are envisaged for 2024. The idea, in particular, is to facilitate the management of animations and concerts.

The objective is to accommodate new summer businesses, including a small restaurant space from 2024, to meet a unanimous demand for site users.

The quality of lake water: an action plan against cyanobacteria will be followed in parallel with the project. Only long -term actions are to be considered, in order to reduce the discharges of nitrates and phosphates to water. On the watershed concerned, this targets agricultural uses on the one hand, non -collective sanitation and the ecological catering of the Bairon stream on the other. A meeting with the actors concerned will be organized this winter by the CD08 this winter with the design office being recruited on the subject, mobilizing water agency funding and technical support from the Ardennes Regional Natural Park.

2 new houses

The lake house

The positioning and targets of this equipment are being studied, knowing that groups, sports courses and green classes/nature classes already constitute privileged targets. The house will be inclusive and accessible to all types of disability, and will include dedicated spaces (reception, administration, training or teaching, catering and accommodation).
The Tourist Office Destination Sud-Ardennes is associated with these reflections and works on the creation of a tourist promotion space in the territory within this house, in addition to the info point on the beach and actions in direct contact of users.

The nautical house

It will propose to welcome the public wishing to carry out a framed, nautical and terrestrial nature sport practice. The approach will also be inclusive, to be accessible to all handicaps. Studies are underway to properly take into account current uses, and integrate new needs: reception spaces, access to the lake, storage spaces, technical rooms, etc.
Hosted in the current leisure center, everything is done so that the APSCA can maintain its “Sports Nature” service in equal level under the conditions adapted to its expectations. The consultations are being finalized so that the association can from the spring of 2024 resume its activity.
