A second depression expected

“There will be a small lull Saturday,” continues Sébastien Decaux. But from Sunday, a new depression will arrive in the Atlantic. Just like Éowyn, it will be located in Ireland and the British Isles. However, one should expect “a new gust of wind or even a storm” in Loire-Atlantique.

On Sunday evening, “the rain will be very sustained and abundant with a risk of rivers overflowing early next week,” predicts the meteorologist. Precipitation will continue on Monday January 27.

Between Friday and Monday evening, weather models predict accumulations above 60-70 millimeters. This is the low range. Other models predict a more violent episode with accumulations of up to 90 or even 100 millimeters.

A risk of flooding

According to Sébastien Decaux, “the soils are saturated. This will undeniably cause the waterways to react,” he warns. In fact, these last ten days of “calm” with the cold have not allowed the soils to dry and remain very humid.

He also recalls that the year 2024 was “particularly wet, especially in Loire-Atlantique”. Heavier precipitation than usual, particularly at Nantes which is “not far from a record with 24% more rain in 2024 compared to the average.

A situation which did not allow the soils to absorb all the water that fell, especially since “there was neither great heat nor too much wind to help dry the soils and increase evaporation. water”.

When this second depression passes, “the wind will need to be monitored,” warns the meteorologist. “The gusts are estimated at 90-100 km/h, It is a serious gust of wind. Some models predict gusts at 110-120 km/h on the coasts, Sunday evening and Monday. »

This very turbulent and very rainy weather, between Sunday noon and Tuesday, will give the impression of not having a break. There will be continuous rain and wind. It’s a lasting episode.
