The Rabat anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office sentenced a student to seven years in prison at first instance for death threats against Amazigh researcher and activist Ahmed Assid. Last week, the individual was found guilty, based on a comment posted under a video the complainant shared on his social media, addressing the issue of inheritance.

The Internet user reacted to Ahmed Assid’s comments by writing to him that he “deserves to be shot” (sic). After the prosecution was contacted, the suspect was arrested and questioned by the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) of Salé. According to the Arabic-language daily Assabah, investigators discovered that the student’s father worked in a bar in Casablanca.

Technical expertise on the individual’s phone made it possible to discover numerous videos from the armed wing of Hamas and content from Al-Qaeda. The investigation also showed that the young man had been in contact with an Iraqi national affiliated with Daesh. As part of the investigation, he admitted his extremist leanings in recognition that he thought he was carrying out a terrorist operation on national territory.

Before the court, however, the defendant chose to deny everything outright, going so far as to claim that he was not the author of the incriminated comment.
