The Perrache exchange center is getting a makeover

Indeed, the Métropole de in conjunction with the City of Lyon and Sytral Mobilités unveiled the “Ouvrons Perrache” project this Thursday, January 23. An ambitious project which will last 5 years for a total cost of 170 million euros.

In this overall budget, 32.8 million are covered by the Métropole de Lyon and 140 million by the Quartus and Apsys operator group.

“The building is old from 1976, today we are transforming it, we are adapting it for our times,” explains project architect Dietmar Feichtinger.

This new imagined place will completely reinvent itself, starting with the opening of the “lock”, a 12 m high urban window which will provide direct access to pedestrians between Place des Archives and Place Carnot. From now on, this exchange space will be open at ground level, giving way to a vast pedestrian esplanade.

“We will try to reconcile the Lyonnais with Perrache, with the architecture and the program of this project”, develops architect Dietmar Feichtinger.

The first stage of this project is the destruction in mid-February of the footbridge connecting the exchange center to the SNCF station. This part of the project lasted between 6 to 7 months at a cost of 800,000 euros. With the footbridge permanently closed, a change in traffic will be carried out for the movement of users. A signage and information service will be put in place to mainly use the Pejot passage.

By 2031, the project promises to reconcile the Lyonnais with this district of Perrache thanks to its new architecture, but also its new features.

Rethinking urban mobility

Every square meter of the 25,750 m2 of surface area will be exploited. At level 0, there will be a 300-seat cycle station, cafes and shops as well as services intended for travelers from the SNCF station.

As for access to public transport, they too will be redesigned with an extension of the platforms of the Perrache tram station which serves T1 and T2. The addition of new trains would increase transport capacity by 30%.

“We looked for an attractiveness to the place”

But that's not all, the place is supposed to host restaurants, shops, daily services, crafts, a 4-star hotel with 150 rooms, a gym and offices and collaborative spaces.

Finally, a green space is planned on the roof of Perrache. A somewhat forgotten space which nevertheless has great potential. The architect understood this well by creating a panoramic garden of 3,700 m2 on this roof. Continuing in their nature-in-city momentum, they will create a vast green roof terrace offering a 360° view of the entire city of Lyon and with a view of Fourvière. A food hall for eating and spaces to rest will also be created.

A reduction in parking spaces is still to be noted, despite the retention of 530 parking spaces in the building.
