A consecration for a man who dedicated his life to medicine. At the end of December 2024, Professor Francis Michot, who headed the digestive surgery department at Rouen University Hospital, was elected to the position of vice-president of the National Academy of Medicine in 2025. He assumed the presidency for the year 2026.
A prestigious position
His long career, which today brings him to this prestigious position, began in Rouen, where he studied medicine, before moving to Paris to do his internship. He finally returned to Rouen in 1980, and notably headed the digestive surgery department of the University Hospital until 2014. Colorectal surgery is his core specialty.
In the academic field, the professor also chaired the digestive surgery subsection at the National Council of Universities (CNU) from 2004 to 2014. A prolific author, he has to his credit more than 2000 referenced publications and nearly 340 oral communications at national and international conferences.
What is the role of the National Academy of Medicine?
Concerning his accession to the head of the National Academy of Medicine, “it is a prestigious position, it is an honor to access it”, confides the professor to 76actu. Regarding its missions of the Academy, its role is to “advise the government in all areas of its competence, health in the broad sense of the term”.
-As an Academy, we are completely independent of any power.
“We are divided into four divisions: surgery; medicine ; biology and pharmacy; public and veterinary health,” continues the professor. And added: “If we consider that on such a subject, we must give our opinion, we can do so. The government can also contact us on certain subjects. »
