Civil Protection Minister Harjit Sajjan announced on Wednesday that his name would not appear on the ballot papers in the upcoming elections.
Mr. Sajjan, who is also minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency, was first elected in Vancouver South in 2015, when Mr. Trudeau’s Liberals took power in Ottawa.
This former Canadian soldier was immediately appointed Minister of National Defense, before being transferred to International Development in 2021, then to Civil Protection in 2023.
-In a statement posted Wednesday on social media, Minister Sajjan thanks Mr. Trudeau for his “leadership and unwavering commitment to Canada.”
He states in particular that the political landscape has become increasingly toxic and polarized in recent years, and invites politicians to “rediscover civility by adopting mutual respect”.
Mr. Sajjan, who remains “a dedicated member of the Liberal Party,” recently announced his intention to support Mark Carney in the party’s leadership race.
