The closures will take place over the next two months on different dates for each site. The decision affects the livelihood of 1,700 permanent employees. The seven warehouses also have 250 temporary employees who will see their contracts honored until expiry, the online retailer confirms.
The ax falls in a context of tense labor relations with the unionized employees of the American multinational’s warehouse in Laval. Amazon had opposed the union accreditation of the CSN granted in May, but was rejected by the Administrative Labor Court in October.
Amazon says the decision, “which was not taken lightly,” has no connection to the unionization of its warehouse. The company is thus returning to its 2020 business model, which relied on third-party companies to deliver packages.

“Following a recent review of our operations in Quebec, we saw that returning to a third-party delivery model supported by small local businesses, similar to what we had in 2020, will make it possible to offer the same good service and even savings for our customers in the long term,” says spokesperson Kristin Gable in a written statement.
