Kevin Magnussen insists he is perfectly happy to end his Formula 1 career.
The last time he lost his seat, at the end of 2020, the Dane said he found racing at the back of the grid increasingly “boring”. He spent the next season focusing on endurance racing and moving into Indycar.
And now, without a seat in Formula 1 again, the 32-year-old driver is happy to take a step forward in terms of competitiveness after signing for BMW. It faces the 24 Hours of Daytona this weekend, Le Mans later this year and the full WEC championship.
Magnussen stated that “My goal is to try and win some big races.”
“I've been preparing a bit for a few years. I knew I wasn't very enthusiastic about continuing in Formula 1 anymore, even though we were scoring points regularly last year. I wasn't really actively looking for another contract in Formula 1.”
“So I had already shifted my focus to other things, categories where I can win. And I knew that I wanted to evolve in the world of Endurance cars. I find it very exciting to see how competitive the competition is intense today with all these manufacturers who have joined the discipline.”
-“Everyone keeps saying it’s the golden age of endurance racing and I really wanted to be a part of it.”
Magnussen concludes with the fact that he considers his time in Endurance as “final”.
