A few hours before the inauguration of the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump, scheduled for this Monday, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) displays the map of Morocco incorporating the territory of the Sahara.
The complete map of Morocco can be seen on the CIA website with the description: “Map of Morocco showing the main population centers, as well as parts of neighboring countries and the North Atlantic Ocean. Since 2020, the United States has recognized Western Sahara as an integral part of Moroccan territory. A complete sheet is now dedicated to the kingdom, on the CIA website. It details its strategic location, its millennial history, its political and economic system, as well as its cultural and demographic diversity.

The United States unveiled, for the very first time, a “new official map” of Morocco integrating the territory of the Sahara during a ceremony organized at the American embassy in Rabat, on December 12, 2020, two days after the executive order signed by Donald Trump. This had formalized the American recognition of the Moroccan nature of the Sahara. Since then, several countries such as Israel, Spain and France have followed in the wake of the United States. They not only recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, but they also adopted the map of Morocco integrating the territory of the Sahara.

With the return of Donald Trump to the White House, the Western Sahara conflict which has pitted Morocco against the Polisario front since the 1970s could experience significant development. The new American administration could invest in the search for a definitive solution.
