Monsignor André Gueye, head of the Catholic Church in the regions of Thiès and Diourbel, expressed his support for accountability, while emphasizing the importance of respecting the rights of defendants. His statements were made during the ceremony celebrating the 70th anniversary of the École Sainte de Bambey, an event which brought together religious, educational and civil figures.

The Bishop stressed that the Church is in favor of accountability. But specified that this must imperatively take place within the framework of respect for the fundamental rights of the individuals concerned. According to him, justice is essential to move forward on the path to development, but it must be delivered in a fair manner and respectful of the rights of all citizens, including those of defendants. “The Church is against violence in all its forms. She is against any form of tension which could cause instability. But the Church is for justice, without which we cannot move forward on the path of development. The Church is for peace, without which all development is compromised. » declared Monsignor André Gueye.

The Bishop also insisted on the need to respect the institutions and rules in force in any judicial or political process. For him, justice must be done “according to the rules of the art”, that is to say in accordance with established laws, while guaranteeing respect for the rights of all.

In addition, Monsignor Gueye took this opportunity to return to their recent audience with the President of the Republic. He indicated that this meeting had made it possible to raise specific concerns of the Christian community and to remind the head of state that he is “the President of all Senegalese”. The Bishop clarified that he had expressed his concerns regarding the life of the Church and the well-being of the community.

“He needs prayer. We had come to present to him our concerns regarding our community as a Church. He is the head of state, the President of all Senegalese and we must therefore tell him our current concerns so that he can take care of them. » added Monsignor André Gueye.
