A fishing boat capsized off the coast of Saint-Denis d'Oléron on Monday January 20 around 3 a.m. This is La Rose des vents, a 9-meter gillnetter built in 2012. Rescue was initiated around 5:50 a.m. when the CROSS-Étel received signals from the boat's distress beacon.
The fisherman and his sailor initially managed to take refuge on the hull of the boat. But a wave knocked them down. The boss, aged 25, managed to get back on the hull, unlike his sailor. At that point he lost contact with him. He was able to swim back to land. He was taken to Rochefort hospital.
-The boat ended up running aground on the beach of La-Brée-les-Bains.
The French Navy helicopter was mobilized. He took turns with Dragon 17, the Civil Security helicopter. Resources from the SNSM of La Rochelle were also dispatched to the area to try to find the sailor.
His body was finally located a few hundred meters from the beach and brought ashore by firefighters at 12:30 p.m. He was 22 years old.
The reasons for the capsize are not yet known.
