Remember, it was last fall. The Free operator was the victim of what is probably the most serious cyberattack in its history: 19 million customers affected and millions of IBANs leaked. Today, the consequences of this attack are beginning to take shape.
While we thought the Free hacking affair was far behind us, the consequences of this massive data theft are starting to be felt by certain subscribers. However, one of the two hackers declared that this attack should only be used to warn Free of its security vulnerabilities and that the stolen data would then be kept or destroyed. Instead, they are used for malicious purposes.

Fake emails larger than life
Names, first names, email addresses, subscriber numbers… So much useful information for cybercriminals who engage in phishingthese fake emails which play on the lack of vigilance of certain Internet users to steal even more data.
On X (formerly Twitter), user @HTan_Nguyen shares a screenshot of a phishing email. However, the latter included several true information: name, first name, telephone number, subscriber line as well as the bank to which it is attached.
This email presents an “exceptional promo” reserved for hand-picked subscribers, in this case Free subscribers who are customers of the CIC bank, as well as a gift voucher of 100 euros without eligibility conditions. An offer that was a little too seductive which aroused the suspicion of the Internet user. All he had to do was look at the sender's email to realize the deception: the domain name has nothing to do with that of the operator.
In the case of phishing, there are a few measures to adopt:
- ALWAYS be wary of tempting offers received by email or SMS
- Never click on the links contained in these emails and SMS
- Check the domain name of the sender's email to ensure its reliability
- Never communicate confidential information by email to your operator, they already have it
- Make your loved ones aware of these good practices
