Good moves (and a rarity) from Toyota and Lexus in 2024

If some manufacturers have struggled in 2024, Toyota can cut the cider around the galette des rois with a historic record year. 1.21 million new Toyotas and Lexuses were sold in Europe last year, up 4% compared to 2023 which was already a very good year. For Toyota, the progress is such that the brand is grabbing market share in , now ahead of Citroën. And to drive the point home, Toyota utility vehicles reached a record of 94,283 registrations, an increase of 20%. Obviously, the vast majority of cars sold by the group are Toyotas since Lexus only accounts for 88,184 units.. But Lexus put in a good performance and the group above all made the right choice with one model in particular.

Toyota's winning pawns

Toyota's best seller in Europe is the Yaris Cross© Toyota

Toyota's best sales are not really surprises since these are the models that are most commonly found in France. The little “half” surprise is the presence of the Aygo X which is ahead of the RAV4, although it is aging. But very probably still Toyota's best seller in the world, pending final figures.

  • Yaris Cross : 204 787
  • Yaris : 176 782
  • Corolla : 163 393
  • C-HR : 131 622
  • Aygo X : 97 466
  • RAV4: 94,344

Almost all the lights are green for the Toyota group: the Toyota brand is the second best-selling in Europe, and Lexus' market share has now reached 2.5%.

The good student, and rarity

The Japanese group is not always the most dynamic in terms of product strategy. Just look at its reluctance to go electric, with the bZ4X and the all-new Urban Cruiser. Lexus, a rather conservative brand, is no exception to this trend and the arrival of an urban crossover was late. But how beneficial since the LBX alone already represented 23,000 of the manufacturer's 80,000 sales in Europe! He is therefore no stranger to Lexus' strong progress on the Old Continent.

The Supra experienced a diametrically opposite fate. Toyota sold 442 copies of the Supra in Europe throughout the year. This is less than the Mirai (533 units). In France, the Supra is obviously handicapped by its penalty, in addition to a high price. If you come across a French Supra with a plate starting with the letter G, make a wish…
