Many times shifted, the signature of a new “strategic partnership” between Russia and Iran finally took place on Friday January 17, in front of an audience of officials from the two countries, within the Kremlin, just three days before the inauguration of Donald Trump as American president. But while this partnership was put forward as a global alliance in the form of a counterweight to « diktat » of the West, it also appears, beyond the political display, as the fruit of numerous subtexts and compromises.

Officially, this agreement – ​​which has not been made public – covers a range of areas, ranging from energy to finance, transport to industry, including agriculture, culture, science and technology. But the text also includes exchanges “in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy”notably “the construction of nuclear energy installations”, according to information released by the Kremlin. However, in the eyes of the West, very concerned by the progress of the Iranian nuclear program, there is little doubt that military issues remain the main driving force behind this agreement.
