Sunday January 19 at 6:00 p.m.

Situation

On the sidelines of strongly depressional conditions between Italy and the Maghreb, Sardinia and Corsica are experiencing heavy rain until Sunday evening.

In Corsica, it is the east of the island as well as the central reliefs which are directly affected, with a strong easterly wind which blocks the rain (orographic blocking).

The amount of rain is expected to be significant: between Saturday evening and Sunday evening, we expect 50 to 100 mm of water, up to 150 mm locally, corresponding to more than 1 month of rain.

This precipitation occurs in the form of snow from 1300 meters. Around 1800 meters, the layer could reach 50 cm, and almost 1 m around 2000 meters, raising fears of a high risk of avalanches or snow slides on Monday. These are blizzard conditions with the formation of snowdrifts on the high-altitude road passes, especially as the wind is blowing at 80-90 km/h.

Near the eastern Corsican coast, due to heavy seas with waves 2 to 3 m high driven by a strong easterly wind at 80 km/h, risks of coastal submersion cannot be ruled out.

Observation

At 12 o'clock, the center of the depression rises from Sardinia towards the south of Corsica, pushed by a strong southeast wind at altitude. The rains are light for the moment and are not yet an aggravating factor.
