Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will attend the inauguration of Donald Trump as president of the United States on Monday in Washington, her services announced on Saturday.

The far-right head of government has positioned herself as the European leader closest to the American billionaire and maintains very friendly relations with Elon Musk, very close to the new president.

No foreign heads of state or government are traditionally invited to the inauguration ceremonies of American presidents, where countries are represented by their ambassadors.

But Donald Trump decided otherwise this time, inviting several foreign leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, who declined this invitation, Argentine President Javier Milei, and even former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. The latter, banned from leaving Brazil since February 2024 as part of an investigation into an alleged coup d’état plan, will not be able to attend.

French far-right MEP Marion Maréchal will also attend Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony, she said on Thursday. Eric Zemmour announced last week that he would also take part.
