The ban on Crit'air 3 vehicles will lead to a reduction in two major pollutants in Greater Paris, according to a study carried out by Airparif engineers that franceinfo was able to consult and the results of which were published on Friday January 17.

The expected drop is 14% for nitrogen dioxide and 13% for fine particles. In both cases, these are significant impacts on health, recalls Pierre Pernot, engineer and communications director at Airparif. “Nitrogen dioxide will have significant impacts, both on the respiratory system, and links with the onset of diabetes. Fine particles will have repercussions on the cardiovascular system. Their small size allows them to enter” more easily in the body.

Low Emission Zones therefore improve air quality. The new stage, with the ban on Crit'air 3 vehicles on January 1 in Lyon, Grenoble, Paris and Montpellier, is part of this dynamic. This new stage of the ZFE would reduce by 2,000 the number of Ile-de- residents currently exposed to pollutants exceeding regulatory values. This also has positive effects for those who live outside this area. “When it comes to air pollution, every microgram not emitted is a microgram saved in terms of the impacts it could have on health”explains Pierre Pernot.

To achieve these results, the ban on Crit'air 3 must be fully applied. For the moment, there is no question of fining motorists, the time has come for education whether in Paris, Lyon, Grenoble or Montpellier.
