Morocco provided Spain with intelligence services that enabled the country to dismantle prolific terrorists seeking to undermine the country’s security,according to a Spanish official.
The Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST), Abdellatif Hammouchi, today had a meeting with the Spanish Commissioner General for Information, Javier Antonio Susin Bercero.
The latter made a working visit to Rabat, at the head of a high-level security delegation, with the aim of discussing bilateral cooperation in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
Hammouchi and his Spanish counterpart discussed several subjects, assessing the risks and terrorist threats in various regions and conflict zones, in particular those of the Sahel and the Sahara, indicates a press release from the DGST.
Morocco, long aware of the threat posed by terrorist groups active in the Sahel for the entire region, has highlighted the importance of shared responsibility to deal with this situation.
Last June, the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, reaffirmed Rabat’s commitment to redouble its efforts to put an end to terrorist threats, stressing that nearly 60% of the victims of terrorism in the world are in Africa. sub-Saharan and West Africa.
Today’s meeting between Hammouchi and his Spanish counterpart also provided an opportunity to take stock of the role and missions of the DGST as part of the joint efforts aimed at ensuring the success of the 2030 World Cup, co-organized by Morocco, Spain and Portugal.
The two officials expressed their determination to share their expertise in criminal intelligence, proactivity and neutralizing all threats to public security.
-According to the DGST, the Spanish Commissioner General of Information praised the high level of cooperation between the two countries, specifying that Madrid has repeatedly avoided terrorist attacks thanks to reliable intelligence provided by the DGST services.
Morocco’s counterterrorism services have played a crucial role in Spain’s security, helping to repeatedly dismantle terrorist cells, including high-ranking members seeking to harm the European country’s security.
Susin Bercero expressed her country’s desire to continue to benefit from the support of the DGST in the fight against terrorism. Facing a new generation of emerging security challenges in the Sahel and its surrounding regions, he praised Morocco’s regional leadership and stressed the need for joint operations and simultaneous arrests.
“The discussions between the two sides were marked by a convergence of views on the need to strengthen and intensify common security cooperation mechanisms in various fields”concludes the DGST press release.
It was specified that this visit reflected the security partnership between the two countries and the growing demand for Morocco’s security approach in the fight against terrorism and extremism.
