OTTAWA — Ontario Premier Doug Ford arrived at a meeting of the country’s premiers Wednesday armed with his now-frequent message of unity and strength in the fight against U.S. tariffs — and a new accessory anti-annexation.
Speaking to reporters before heading to the meeting, Mr. Ford wore a navy blue baseball cap with the words “Canada is Not for Sale” on the front and the year Canada was founded – 1867 – on the side.
The message on the headgear, in the style of US President-elect Donald Trump’s red “Make America Great Again” caps, refers to Mr Trump’s stated desire to make Canada the 51st state.
Doug Ford later wrote in a social media post that his cap came from Jackpine, Ottawa entrepreneurs, and their new online hat store, strongandfreehat.ca.
Items offered on the site include baseball caps and toques that bear the words “Canada is Not for Sale” or “Strong and Free,” which the duo behind the hats say were inspired by a recent interview given by Mr. Ford to Fox News, in which the host promoted Donald Trump’s idea of annexation.
Provincial and territorial premiers and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are set to discuss the country’s plan Wednesday to respond to Trump’s threats to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian goods immediately after he takes office next week .
