It was supposed to be a question of the attractiveness of the teaching profession, a regional skill, but the discussions quickly shifted towards federal plans. On Monday, at the call of the unions, some 30,000 people demonstrated in Brussels to voice their fears about the plans of trainer De Wever and other Arizona negotiators.

The N-VA, CD&V and Vooruit, all three involved in the federal negotiations, made it clear that maintaining current pensions was, for them, not tenable. “Those who say that everything can stay as it is are playing tricks,” said Hannelore Goeman (Vooruit).
