Participants in the 4th international meeting of ministers responsible for mining affairs decided, following the progress made in 2024 through the creation of three regional centers of excellence in Africa, West Asia and Central Asia, to entrust the management of the sustainable development center at the Institute of Geology and Sustainable Mining, under the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P).

Under this decision, UM6P will be in charge, alongside two centers in Saudi Arabia and South Africa, of training young people to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the mining sector through exploration and geological exploitation and the creation of a productive mining industry of the future, with little environmental impact.

The Mohammed VI Polytechnic University thus places itself at the forefront of efforts aimed at transforming mining practices, with the commitment of the sustainable development center to promoting environmentally friendly mining practices, social inclusion and economic viability. By encouraging the principles of circular economy, waste reduction, combating pollution and site rehabilitation, this center will contribute to establishing new standards in sustainable mining.

These centers will be supported, following the principles of knowledge sharing and encouraging cross-border cooperation, by six other centers from Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Turkey, the United States and the University of Pennsylvania.

The Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development contributed efficiently to the achievement of this feat through its constant support and strategic vision for strengthening sustainable development in the mining sector. This is the fruit of the joint efforts of the ministry and UM6P, thus contributing to making the latter an institution capable of playing a leading role within the framework of this initiative.
