Max Verstappen had to bring out the best in himself to win his 4th title in 2024.
The Red Bull driver, who enjoyed the best F1 performance in the first third of the season, then struggled much more with his RB20 as McLaren and Ferrari gained momentum.
There was even a moment, just before Monza, when the Dutchman doubted whether he would be able to resist Lando Norris's rise to the championship.
But for Flavio Briatore, executive advisor of Alpine F1, there was nothing to worry about. The Italian even says he never doubted for a single moment that Verstappen would win his fourth title.
“Verstappen's fourth world title was never in danger, even when Red Bull Racing was struggling and McLaren was excelling with Norris. No. Verstappen becoming champion, I knew it and I saw it. Why? is very simple. Because Verstappen is the best. And then you also become a bigger champion in difficult years.
“It may not have been easy with the 2024 Red Bull, but the quality of the driver is the deciding factor. We see that with Verstappen. The highlight was the Brazilian Grand Prix, in which he passed from 17th place to victory.”
In winning the world title in 2024, Verstappen joins Alain Prost and Sebastian Vettel, both also four-time world champions.
“Verstappen has many similarities with Vettel, who also won his titles at Red Bull four times in a row. In my opinion, it is difficult to compare drivers and decide who is the best, so I leave that to the fans.”
Another battle between Verstappen and Norris in 2025? Yes, certainly according to him.
“The problem with Norris compared to Verstappen last season was his inexperience. He is still young, too young perhaps. But the experience acquired by Norris will help him in 2025. If McLaren starts well year, he will have every chance.”
