Nearly two months were necessary for the parliamentary groups of the National Assembly to agree on the distribution of the presidencies of the friendship groups with foreign countries. These entities, whose vocation is to promote parliamentary diplomacy, aim to forge links with the legislative assemblies of the nations concerned. The highly strategic designation of the presidencies gave rise to long negotiations.
The office of the National Assembly – its highest collegial body – officially launched the procedure on November 20, 2024. It should be definitively ratified at its next meeting, on January 22. However, it was during a final negotiation session, Monday January 13, that the list was finalized. The rule is simple: each camp receives a number of presidencies proportional to its weight. In this respect, the National Rally (RN) group is therefore best served with 35 places, compared to 26 for Renaissance, 20 for La France insoumise (LFI) and 18 for the Socialist Party (PS).
