An American who fled after being sentenced to prison for his role in the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 in Washington was arrested in Canada, Canadian authorities told AFP on Friday.

Vo, 32, applied for asylum in Canada in November after his sentence to nine months in prison in June.

The man who was convicted of four counts during a jury trial in Washington told the press at the end of December that he had fled in the hope of being pardoned when President-elect Donald Trump returns home -White.

“We can confirm that Mr. Vo, a fugitive from American justice, was arrested without incident in Whistler, British Columbia (western Canada), on January 6,” said the Canada Border Services Agency ( ASFC) in a written statement sent to AFP.

The organization added that it had no record of his entry into the country through an official crossing point and had “a legal obligation to return all foreigners who are inadmissible to Canada.”

A hearing is scheduled for January 15, his lawyer told Canadian media.

Donald Trump has pledged to pardon numerous accused and convicted people when he takes office on January 20.

Antony Vo told AFP he hoped to stay in Canada “until it is safe for me to return” to the United States.

“I hope he will pardon me, as well as the other demonstrators of January 6,” he added.
