She has held this position since October 2019, when she also sat as a federal deputy and alderman in Etalle. The first female president of PS Luxembourg, she succeeded Philippe Courard.
In June 2024, she was this time elected regional deputy, and reappointed, following the municipal election of October 2024, in her scabinal functions, where her personal score exceeded the 1000 vote mark. “A historic first for an alderman in Etalle“, she likes to recall.
Alderman of a small town, a priesthood at 1,400 euros per month: “The files are more and more complex”
“The feeling of duty accomplished”
“At the same time, I had the honor of being appointed by Paul Magnette to sit in the office of the Walloon Parliament and to join his close team in order to contribute to the rebuilding of the PS at the national level. After having invested myself for 5 years for PS Luxembourg, it is now in the national authorities that I am called to make my contribution”, continues Mélissa Hanus, currently on maternity leave because she will soon be the mother of a second child.
The young woman therefore had to make choices, and she decided to resign from the provincial presidency of the PS. She assures that she initially intended to occupy this position for 5 years, a deadline which was exceeded last November. “My last objective at the head of PS Luxembourg was to restore our party to a provincial majority, she explains. A goal achieved, against all expectations, despite a reduction in the number of seats (Editor’s note: the PS went from 7 to 4 elected officials) and a PS that was compressed nationally. I am therefore leaving my position with the feeling of duty accomplished for our federation.”

During her maternity leave, the ad interim presidency will be held by vice-president Nathalie Heyard, alderman in Musson, and former provincial deputy.
Who to succeed Mélissa Hanus as president? Elections will have to be held within the provincial federation of PS Luxembourg. No date has yet been set.
