Christmas 2024 is now history and the biggest holiday lovers have not yet decided to get rid of their tree. This is how the city of Ghent, in Belgium, tried to inspire its inhabitants by offering them the opportunity to recycle their real tree by using it in the stove. On its site, the town, located in the northwest of the country, had published ideas for cooking recipes. The objective was to give a second life to the king of the forests on the plate, used to bring a little magic during the month of December. In particular, it was explained how to use the needles to make spreadable butter, as the Scandinavians would do to avoid turning their tree into mere waste.
This Tuesday, January 7, 2025, the Belgian government food safety agency (Afsca) put the kibosh on it, reports TF1 Info. She therefore made a point of reminding us that “Christmas trees are not intended to enter the food chain” and that they can be toxic to humans. And also for our four-legged friends! These commercially sold fir trees are supposed to adorn our living rooms for the holidays and are therefore not intended for taste recipes, as she indicated: “Nothing can guarantee the safe consumption of Christmas trees by both humans and by animals.” It must be said that for their production, pesticides are often used, in addition to “flame retardant” treatments which are additives (…)
