Notice to lovers of sublime black and white photos taken by Sebastian Salgado. The world-famous photographer of Brazilian origin is once again investing in Gallery Polka in Paris to unveil his new exhibition “Genesis Platinum“.
Is it really necessary to present Sebastian Salgado ? Great name in photojournalism, Sebastian Salgado is at the same time a deeply humanist photographer, an artist committed to the protection of the environment and a distinguished traveler, always in search of new images to raise awareness.
Born in 1944 in Aimorés, Brazil, Sebastian Salgado began his career far from the world of photography. After studying economics, he joined the International Coffee Organization (ICO). Sebastian Salgado is then required to travel during his missions. It was from this moment that he began to photograph what he saw during his various trips. The year 1973 marked a turning point in his life, since he decided to leave his job to devote himself to his passion, photography. He then collaborated with the agencies Sygma, Gamma and Magnum Photos until 1994 and took memorable photos, particularly linked to manual labor and human migrations.
Proof of his fame, Sebastian Salgado has received several prestigious awards for his reporting, including the W. Eugene Smith for humanist photography in 1982, the World Press Photo in 1985 and the Visa d’or at Visa pour l'Image in 1990.
His greatest work remains undoubtedly “Genesis“. Composed of different series of photographs, this work questions our relationship to the earth and its resources. Captured between 2004 and 2012, and always taken in black and white, these images feature landscapes, fauna, flora, but also human communities who still live according to their ancestral traditions and cultures.
From January 23 to March 15, 2025the Polka Gallery in Paris therefore presents the new exhibition by Sebastião Salgado, “Genesis Platinum“. The opportunity to (re)discover a selection of photos taken from “ Genesis » fired with platinum-palladium. This unique process, invented in 1873 by the Englishman William Willis, offers the print a “unrivaled stability“, specifies the Polka Gallery.
This is not the first time that Sebastian Salgado takes over this famous Parisian gallery dedicated to the art of photography. Previously, the Brazilian artist had already exhibited there eight times. His last exhibition at the Polka Gallery dates back to 2023. That year, the photographer presented the installation “Great Work“.
In 2025, the Gallery Polka therefore invites once again Sebastian Salgado to take over its walls, on the occasion of the exhibition “Genesis Platinum“. It is to be discovered for free from January 23 to March 15, 2025.
