A week of truth for Anderlecht

A week of truth for Anderlecht
A week of truth for Anderlecht

The expedition has everything of a trap. This Thursday evening, Sporting Anderlecht travels to Beerschot in the quarter-finals of the Belgian Cup.

A priori, this duel between Mauves should not hold any unpleasant surprises for the people of Brussels. After 20 championship matches, Beerschot is quite simply last in the standings: barely 12 points, 2 wins, 6 draws, 12 defeats and the worst defense in the Pro League with 42 goals conceded. At another time, the outcome of such a meeting did not matter.

But now, for several years, with Anderlecht, everything is possible. Moreover, during a sad evening last October, Anderlecht had conceded one of its defeats of the current season at Kiel, against Beerschot. That evening, Antwerp only had barely two shots on target. Enough to win. Whatever happens, Anderlecht will experience a week of truth with first this quarter-final of the Belgian Cup, then, on Sunday, the Topper against Club Bruges.

In the league, Anderlecht remains on two consecutive defeats. Still in third place in the standings, Anderlecht now feels the breath of Antwerp and Union, back to 1 and 2 points respectively. Sunday’s duel against Bruges could be worth its weight in gold mentally.

The Cup as a priority objective

Regardless, Anderlecht still seems too soft to really play a role in the title race. In the event of another white season, it will now be 8 years since the Mauves last won a trophy. The last title dates back to 2017. The last Belgian Cup in 2008…

Too long a period of scarcity. With this in mind, the Cup is a real objective completely within the strings of this core. It’s time for Anderlecht to fill their trophy cabinet again. Noblesse oblige, some would say…
