It’s not just an impression: the sun is ignoring Quebec

Published on January 7, 2025 at 1:01 p.m.

After the red and white of Christmas, another color has taken over in Quebec over the last ten days: gray.

The sun gone

The days are already short this time of year. We have been entitled to less than nine hours of daylight every day since the end of November. And now the sun refuses to show itself during this short period. Since December 28, southern Quebec, particularly the Montreal region, has only had 11 hours of sunshine while the maximum available was around 88 hours. The sun was therefore hidden by clouds almost 88% of the time during this period.

No good news

We would love to tell you that this sequence will finally end this week, but unfortunately, that is really not the case. The sun will continue to shun the province for a few days. The context has been rather disturbed for several days and the situation will continue at least until the beginning of next week. It’s because a system is lurking around Quebec territory and dragging its feet a little. It brings some precipitation, but above all a very persistent cloudy sky.

NUAGE 1

An opportunity not to be missed

There may be a few opportunities to get some vitamin D over the weekend, but we’ll have to be on the lookout and not miss the slightest glimpse of sunshine. Friday promises to be the best day for some rays in southern Quebec. We could achieve four hours of sunlight, which is less than half the duration available for this period, but in a single day, it would be more than a third of what the star has offered us since December 28.

NUAGE 4

Uncertain Sunday

The situation could be similar on Sunday, but nothing is certain. The context remains too disturbed to make a precise forecast and the clouds could continue their domination. The start of next week unfortunately does not herald a major turnaround in the situation. Gray is undoubtedly the star color so far in 2025.
