The Spanish Popular Party in the city of Melilla reacted to press information regarding the possible reopening of commercial customs with Morocco. Seizing the opportunity to attack the ruling party in Spain, the PSOE, he used populism to win over the “good feelings” of the city’s residents.

Following reports of advanced negotiations on the subject of reopening commercial customs between the occupied presidency of Melilla and Morocco, closed by Rabat in 2018, many voices have seized the subject to play political politics.

This is particularly the case of the Popular Party which quickly stepped up to the plate after hearing that Morocco would set the type of goods which will be imported by the city – which disadvantages local traders since 70% of the city’s imports were intended for export to Morocco.

The popular government of Melilla has assured in this sense that it will not give “his approval” to a reopening of commercial customs with Morocco only in the case where it was done on “an equal footing”.

This is the statement of Fadela Mohatar, spokesperson for the Government of Melilla and member of the Popular Party, who insisted that the import and export regime with this busy president, should be done as with any city Spanish or European.

Since Morocco closed commercial customs with Melilla while preventing the phenomenon of “mullet women”the city’s economy experienced a real descent into hell, since most of it was based on the resale of products imported from Spain to Morocco, taking advantage of counterbranding.

The spokesperson for the Regional Executive indicated in this sense that the economic situation of Melilla “is worrying”, claiming that the city has arrived “at the lowest level of GDP”. Accusing the Spanish central government of lack of clarity, she attacked the Socialist Party, saying “shocked” of the possibility that Morocco could impose “its conditions on the passage of goods”.

the Socialist Executive should speak publicly to reassure public opinion, declared
Fadela Mohatar, while emphasizing that “the interests of the citizens of Melilla are threatened and compromised.”

In this sense, the spokesperson criticized “lack of information” from the Government Delegation in Melilla after information circulating in the press without there being any certainty. She also regretted that “the citizens of Melilla know nothing” of the state of negotiations.

According to her, city leaders should provide explanations and clarifications on the management of a hypothetical reopening of commercial customs “because it affects the city of Melilla.”
